The Outer Worlds Trailer Welcomes You to the Halycon Colony

The Outer Worlds has caught the eyes of many not just because of it clearly being the spiritual successor to Obsidian Entertainment’s Fallout: New Vegas that many RPG fans were looking for, but because it has an interesting, corporation-controlled world as well. Some may still not be familiar with the ins and outs of the Halcyon Colony where the game takes place, so Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive, released a brand new trailer giving a great overview of the places players will explore in The Outer Worlds.

Of course, doing so in a standard overview trailer style would be boring, so the video is framed as an infomercial of sorts that is trying to entice people to come to the Halcyon colony. The video starts with Terra-2, the most populated planet of The Outer Worlds, before moving on to Monarch, a planet with less people but more wild and dangerous aliens. Sticking with the game’s tone, there is a clear pro-corporation spin on everything, as the video also ties in work to each location while throwing around questionable terms such as “company approved social clubs.”

After showing players around the Halcyon colony, the trailer moves onto elements like weapons and leveling up under the guise of jobs and career advancement. The Outer Worlds has plenty of quirky weapons, so it is awesome to see more of them in action. It even manages to touch on the game’s unique flaw system that has players choose to be fearful of something, and get debuffs from it, in order to gain an extra skill point.

Xbox’s Matt Booty Discusses The Outer Worlds and Describes it as an “Enduring Franchise”

In a new interview with Game Informer, Xbox’s Matt Booty discusses The Outer Worlds and it becoming an exclusive franchise going forward.

“From what we’ve seen of Outer Worlds, my hope is we can build and then it becomes an enduring franchise and it really grows and we can expand that,” Booty says. “I think it’s a great universe they’ve created. And I think about what are the things that you need for a franchise to kind of bear weight? Like what can it withstand? Is it a narrative, is it a set of characters, is it a universe that’s big enough that you could start to add onto it?”

Booty also mentions that The Outer Worlds could one day be like Halo where there are different stories in that universe told through novels and comics among other mediums. Additionally, Booty mentions Minecraft as an example of a franchise that makes sense to be on multiple consoles whereas The Outer Worlds could be one that benefits from Microsoft’s resources.

Recently, Dualshockers’ own Brandon Doerrer got to check out The Outer Worlds and explore the game’s world and characters. Additionally, the game has been announced for Nintendo Switch but no specific release date has been announced. As more news and footage is released, my excitement increases and it’s easily become one of my most anticipated games of the year.

The Outer Worlds launches on October 25 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The game is available for preorder on Amazon now.

The Outer Worlds’ Director Does Not Want the Game to Lecture Players on Politics

The Outer Worlds is a heavily anticipated title by many RPG fans and obviously deals with some political subjects. Despite this, Co-Director Leonard Boyarsky recently told Video Games Chronicle that Obsidian Entertainment is being “very careful” to ensure that The Outer Worlds is not lecturing players on political issues, as that is “the last thing we want to do.”

He isn’t outright denying a political messages like some other developers; instead, Obsidian Entertainment does not want to lecture people about a certain political viewpoint while presenting the themes of The Outer Worlds. “I don’t want people to think this is a really hard, politically-charged game: it’s supposed to be fun, it’s supposed to be humorous. So we don’t want to set up strawman or anything and say, ‘look how horrible this is!’ It’s really about looking at all aspects of issues. The last thing we want to do is make a game that people feel is lecturing them.”

Leonard believes that any political focus within The Outer Worlds is on the faulty power structures and how those impact things like capitalism. “I like money: I’m not against capitalism and in a lot of ways I’m happy with our society. But of course there are a lot of ways in which it could be improved.” The Outer Worlds will also touch on how those in power can create their own narrative, which is usually not entirely truthful. “It can be insidious; the way which people control the stories you tell about the world. If you let other people control that narrative, then they can control you to a certain degree. That can be any form of government: if it wasn’t capitalism it could be something else,” he stated.

He went on to compare The Outer Worlds to Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, a cult classic RPG Boyarsky helped create, when it comes to how the games handle the impact of power structures. “But like how with [2001 RPG] Arcanum when we were dealing with racial issues, the story always comes down to balance of power, how people get power and how they use it.”

The Outer Worlds Seems to Be Making an Appearance at E3 2019

With a huge array of talent behind it and an intriguing universe to exploreThe Outer Worlds is among the more high-profile games that many are anticipating on the horizon, and it seems that with E3 2019 around the corner, we can expect to hear some new information tied to the game during the event next month.

The official Twitter account for The Outer Worlds teased that we should “pay attention to broadcasts from Los Angeles, California, Earth, in the coming weeks,” indicating that we’re likely to get some new announcements for the game at E3 2019.

At this point in time, the main detail that many are waiting for is the release date of The Outer Worlds, with previous rumors indicating that the game might arrive in August 2019. If the game does plan to arrive sometime in August, then naturally E3 would make sense to share that information with the rest of the universe…I mean, world.

Likewise, that also leaves the question of whether we will see The Outer Worlds during one of the press conferences at E3 2019 in the form of either new gameplay or a cinematic trailer. Logically, the Xbox press conference would make the most sense after Microsoft acquired developer Obsidian Entertainment last year to give the spotlight to one of its newly-acquired studios, despite The Outer Worlds not being a wholly-exclusive title, as it was in development prior to the acquisition.

The Outer Worlds is currently in development for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and is expected to arrive sometime in 2019.

The Outer Worlds for PC Will be Exclusive to the Epic Games Store at Launch

Following the events of Epic’s Unreal event at GDC today, developer Obsidian Entertainment and publisher Private Division announced that they would be partnering with Epic much like many others to exclusively release the upcoming The Outer Worlds exclusively on the Epic Games Store at launch for PC.

As you can glean from this, The Outer Worlds won’t be available on Valve’s popular marketplace Steam at first for those who are looking to play on PC. Much like many other deals of this nature that publishers have made with EpicThe Outer Worlds will only be exclusive to the Epic Games Store for 1 full year before then coming to other digital platforms.

While this news isn’t all that shocking considering just how many publishers have been agreeing to these deals with Epic lately–Remedy’s Control was also announced the be doing the same timed-exclusivity deal today–it’s surely a continued source of annoyance for those wishing to have all of their games accessible through a single PC launcher. Still, I would encourage you to not let one minor issue dissuade you from potentially purchasing and playing an upcoming title that you think looks enjoyable.

And if you would prefer not to play The Outer Worlds on PC because of this, it will still be readily available on PS4 and Xbox One when it releases later this year.

The Outer Worlds Developers Talk Level Cap, Procedural Generation and Transparency in Game Development

There are so few developers as open about their games as developer Obsidian Entertainment is with their upcoming project, The Outer Worlds. Despite seemingly new updates rolling out about the game every week, the developers always appear to have some new tidbit of information about the Fallout like RPG. This week, Co-Directors Leonard Boyarsky and Tim Cain go on a bender, answering any and all questions that fans of the game may have.

The responses come from an hour and fifteen-minute remote video interview with publication Game Informer, where Obsidian Entertainment’s Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky take on back-to-back questions about The Outer Worlds. This is a video packed with content, so if you are interested in hearing over an hour of information, go ahead and check it out below:

But if we are pulling out some highlights, some of the most poignant responses from both Cain and Boyarsky circle around transparency. the Game Informer team starts off by praising Obsidian for being more forthcoming about the game than what is normally permitted in the gaming landscape, something that Cain states is “kinda sad.”

This is then demonstrated in the video — apart from just answering (most) every question that comes across the deck, Cain and c seem to offer information with no spin. When asked why the game isn’t aiming for long playthroughs, they respond that they simply don’t have the money and resources to support that. On the other hand, they do feel it is a benefit — there is a market for small-scale RPGs given how deep everyone’s backlogs have become.

At some point, the conversations shifts to level caps and whether they will be in the game. Short, sweet, and to the point, Cain responds “Yes” and that the cap will be set at 30. This will be accompanied with level-based progression, where your skills will upgrade as you level up (as compared to when you use the skill).

Additionally, the topic broaches the popular trend of procedural generation. When asked if some of the settings will be created using an algorithm like No Man’s Sky, both Cain and Boyarsky confirm the game is entirely hand-drawn: “We talked about procedural generation super briefly in the beginning and set it aside. Not for this game.”

They talk further about this point, specifically that if they are using the tool is used as a crutch to create a bigger and broader map, they will still need to fill this with unique content. The Obsidian team draws a comparison to VR, where many developers originally dove into the emerging game developing concept before figuring out if it would be a good fit for their specific game.

Also, they (understandably) want to be able to test all their content.

Like we said, this is not the only big news we’ve heard about The Outer Worlds lately. Only a short while ago we saw that the release date may have leaked on Steam, though that is still unconfirmed. However, in a more official capacity, the team has outlined the companion-focused leadership role and how your decisions will change aspects of the game, including the artwork.

The Outer Worlds Release Date Possibly Leaked on Steam

Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer Worlds is one of the most hotly anticipated games of 2019. As the developers continue to show more and more of the game, they have remained confident in the game’s 2019 release window. On February 22, we may have learned when exactly the game will be releasing a bit earlier than Obsidian and Private Division may have intended. Checking the Steam DB page for The Outer Worlds reveals that the page was briefly modified to feature a release date of August 6, 2019.

The change was quickly reverted after a couple of hours but can still be seen on the page’s Steam DB changelog. Because the date seems to have been added by the developer or publisher and was removed fairly quickly, The Outer Worlds releasing on that day now seems to be real possibility. August 6 is a Tuesday as well, so it would make sense to release a game on that date.

While the possible August 6 release date is the biggest thing to come from that recent modification of The Outer Worlds’ Steam page, the same update reveals that the game will feature Brazilian, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Russian, and Spanish subtitles. For a text heavy game, it is good to know that many languages will be supported so more people can play it.

The fact that a possible release date leaked may cause hype for the game to grow even further, though the developers have recently discussed what the negative aspects of a such a large hype cycle are. Specifically, when it comes to length and size, Obsidian Entertainment expects The Outer Worlds to be comparable to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords. That being said, The Outer Worlds should be immensely replayable due to the massive amount of player choice and roles players can fill.

While this leak makes it fairly likely that the game will be releasing on August 6, 2019, it should still be taken with a grain of salt until we hear about it officially from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division. The Outer Worlds “Roughly Comparable” to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 in Size

Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, Co-Directors of The Outer Worlds at Obsidian Entertainment, recently discussed the negative aspects of the massive amounts of hype for the game . During that conversation, the game’s length and size came up. While The Outer Worlds may be a bit shorter than some people might have been expecting, the developer hope it will be an immensely replayable with varying length that depends on on how one decides to play.

“People are speculating hundreds of hours of gameplay…no,” comments Tim Cain. Leonard Boyarsky says the game’s length and size is “roughly comparable to a KOTOR 2.” For reference, How Long to Beat pegs Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords at about 30 hours for a regular playthrough. When the GameInformer interviewer gave them a ballpark of between 15 and 40 hours, Tim and Leonard also seemed to agree with that.

That large variation of time mostly depends on how people play the game. “It’s hard for us to come up with the hour limit because it depends on how you play it,” says Tim. Meanwhile, Leonard said “we’ve had people play through it in 45 minutes to an hour and some people take 3 to 4 hours to get through it” in regards to The Outer Worlds’ opening area.” He then delved into how different people like to play.

“Some people are going to want to vacuum everything up in every level and not leave until every task is done and every faction quest is done, and other people are just going to want to play the main story,” Leonard said. “Stealthing a lot obviously adds time because you have to be very patient and watch patrol routes and stuff like that is usually slower than the combat path which is sometime slower than the dialogue path.”

Tim Cain also thinks the game will be very replayable as people “will want to see how other things would have worked out.” He confirmed that there would be several “choice points” in the game where people will feel motivated to see how all of the available options would play out. Even though the game may be shorter than some are expecting, Leonard brought up the fact that the development team have “decided to put their effort into the reactivity and replayability,” both of which RPG fans will probably appreciate.

“Because of our size and budget, those necessitate a smaller, more tightly controlled game more than a giant sandbox open world where you can run everywhere and do everything,” Leonard says to sum things up. The Outer Worlds is currently poised to be available physically for PS4 and Xbox One and digitally for PC later this year. The game will still cost $60 at launch, though the developers have confirmed that there are no microtransactions in The Outer Worlds.

The Outer Worlds Will Be Getting a Physical Release, Priced at $60

With its reveal at The Game Awards this past DecemberThe Outer Worlds quickly shot up to the list of most anticipated games for the year for many watching. While it’s not known just yet when the game is actually hitting later this year, we do know at least a few more details for the game, namely that you’ll be able to pick it up in stores or grab it digitally.

Coming from Game Informer, publisher Private Division has revealed that The Outer Worlds will be getting a physical release across PS4, Xbox One, and PC, outside of its release on digital platforms as well. The publisher also confirmed that the title will be priced at $60, indicating that we can expect it to a full-priced release.

At this time, neither Private Division or Obsidian has revealed just yet when The Outer Worlds will arrive later this year, so its release date is still up in the air. However, while the game was only formally revealed a few months ago, we do at least have some core ideas of what the game will offer.

Notably, The Outer Worlds will be open to a degree for players to explore, though it won’t quite be a true “open-world” game where players will have one giant map to explore. Instead, the game will be composed of multiple areas across two planets, which sounds a bit closer to something like the Borderlands series.

Likewise, it was also reported last year that The Outer Worlds will not feature microtransactions of any kind in the game, which should give those looking for a single-player-oriented experience something to look forward to.

Coming from the minds between the original Fallout and developer Obsidian Entertainment, it’s no surprise that The Outer Worlds is a game that many will be looking forward to later this year, or at least I will. Though it’s still up in the air when the game is actually arriving, I’m just excited to get to know more about what’s in store from Obsidian’s new world to explore.

The Outer Worlds is expected to to release for PS4, Xbox One, and PC later this year.
