Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris Reveals Asuna Gameplay, Winners of the Costume Design Contest

Dengeki Online held an around 9 hours long stream on October 6, titled the “Dengeki Bunko Aki no Nama Housou Festival”. The stream had plenty of new announcements regarding franchises linked to Dengeki. Most notably, a new anime season of The Irregular at Magic High School got announced for 2020, along with an anime for Maou Gakuin no Futeki Gousha. But you’ll be able to read about all that in detail on other anime sites, and we’re here instead to report on the Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris part of the stream.

The Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris corner featured Kirito’s seiyuu Yoshitsugu Matsuoka and Alice’s seiyuu Ai Kayano. Alicization Lycoris ‘s Producers Yousuke Futami and Taiichi Kawai were present as well. They revealed new tidbits of info on the game and some short live gameplay featuring Asuna:

The live gameplay features a boss fight against a giant plant monster. They mentioned how the boss has infinite HP for testing purposes, hence why it never dies. Producer Futami mentioned how they focused on giving Asuna a speed-focused fighting style to fit her “Asuna The Flash” nickname.

Producer Yousuke Futami explained how Alicization Lycoris‘ story follows the first anime season of SAO Alicization but has some major divergences at some point. Hence why Asuna makes an appearance so early in the Alicization arc. So you can have a party with Asuna, Alice, Eugeo and Kirito together, something which shouldn’t be possible.

Producer Futami explained how Asuna is also appearing under a different design than in the anime, and basically we’ll have to play the game to figure out what’s going on.

Producer Futami also stated how SAO Alicization Lycoris’ “dubbing is pretty much done”. It’s important to note Bandai Namco didn’t give an estimate for release. Not even a simple “2020”. This is just a guess, but I think the dubbing being pretty much done implies that they’ve advanced quite a bit into development. I’d say the game will probably launch in the early second half of 2020.

Shortly after the first sequence, we got to see a little bit more gameplay, with this time Matsuoka controlling Asuna:

Lastly, they revealed which designs won the fan costume contest:

From left to right, we have the winning costumes in the “Japan” category, “America”, “Asia” and “Other parts of the world”. Ai Kayano commented Alice’s costumes, saying she likes the Japanese one a lot and how it mixes cuteness with sexiness. And she also liked the American one and noted it’s interesting how it feels like a Japanese person designed it instead.

These four costumes will be first print bonuses in the Japanese version of the game. In the west, we should get them as free DLC in the digital version.  The designers of these four costumes will also have their names (or nicknames if they’d rather wish so) appear in the game’s credits.

Lastly, a very short gameplay video featuring Asuna was also posted on the SAO games official Twitter. You can find it below.

Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris is scheduled to launch someday for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The game will also feature an original character named Medina.

Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris New Story Trailer is an Emotional Roller Coaster

Bandai Namco debuted a new Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris trailer for Tokyo Game Show. The trailer is a unique one as instead of the normal gameplay or completely finished cutscenes, this one revealed rough drafts and cuts of various game screens, scenes, and lines. So you have a story trailer that showcases the progress being made in its story process:

As a bonus for fans of the series in addition to Kirito, Eugeo, and Alice the trailer also features Cardinal and fan-favorite Asuna. It’ll be interesting to see what role Asuna plays in the overall plot, considering she wasn’t in the Alicization anime. Another character not present in the anime is original heroine Medina who was revealed in a recent trailer, so that’s another unique change to the plot.

As revealed in a recent livestream, players can switch between controlling Kirito or Alice at anytime and characters can use Sword Skills, Sacred Arts, and Battle Skills. Alicization Lycoris also features a weather system and although there’s not much detail on that now, it should prove to be an interesting mechanic.

The region map has various icons on it indicating things such as ongoing quests and it can also be used for fast-travel. And much like previous titles like Hollow Realization, you can give your party members orders and chain skills together to build your Chain Burst and increase damage.

There was an art contest that ran until early this month, in order to decide on a new original costume for one of the protagonists. The voting is still active, however, so you have until September 27th to vote on your favorite outfit in each region.

Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris will release on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, as was revealed in an official announcement trailer. No official release date for now, although it would make sense for the title to drop close to the third cour of the anime season.

Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris Details Its Battle System with New Live Gameplay

Bandai Namco announced a playable demo of Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris will be available during the “SAO Beater’s Meeting 2019″ event organized by Dengeki in Tokyo on August 18. Ahead of the event, Dengeki showed some of the demo on August 16, during a live stream.

Please note that this article contains spoilers on the Alicization arc of Sword Art Online, if you’ve never read or watched it. In my opinion, you shouldn’t care and keep reading, because Alicization ends up sucking hard, is way too long, and is one of the worst parts of SAO anyway.

The gameplay part starts at the timestamp embedded above. On the stream, they explained how Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris’ demo is divided into two selectable parts. The first part features Kirito and Alice in Rulid Village and its region. The second part lets us control Kirito in a boss fight against Eugeo on the 99th floor of Central Cathedral. They ended up showing the first part on stream, but the SAO game official Twitter posted a video of the Eugeo boss fight. I’ve included it at the end of this article.

Here are the controls in the demo. The characters can use Sword Skills, Sacred Arts, and Battle Skills.

First off, they stressed out how SAO Alicization Lycoris is still in development, so the final game will be pretty different from what we’re seeing here. The demo has a 10 minutes time limit and the characters are immortal, so people can focus on discovering the game without worrying about getting a game over. Rulid Village has plenty of people in it, but the game’s dialogues aren’t done yet so they didn’t show any.

You can also change anytime between controlling Kirito or Alice. The game also has a circle quick menu to change which Sacred Arts (basically magic) you’re using. Sacred Arts have elemental attributes, and enemies have varying elemental weaknesses. Sword Skills are also attributed to button shortcuts.

Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris also has a weather system. A clock is displayed on the bottom right of the screen. We also got to see the Rulid Village region’s map. The map has various icons on it indicating things like ongoing quests. You can also use it for fast-travel.

Later on, we saw a boss battle. Then, they explained how you can give orders to the party members you’re not controlling, like ordering them to use a certain Sword Skill. If you use a Sword Skill at the same time as another party member, you can start a Chain Burst. If you keep linking Sword Skills with the party members, the Chain Burst will keep going, increasing your damage. We could see for example Kirito and Alice both using Vorpal Strike, triggering a Chain Burst.

You can charge Sacred Arts and make them more powerful, but you’re vulnerable when charging. Once a Sacred Art is charged, you can store it, start attacking and trigger it at any time to chain it into a combo. You can also cancel Sword Skills into Sacred Arts.

They also mentioned how the type of orders and strategies you can give to party member will increase as you progress through the game. The game also has Battle Skills you can use for effects like healing or buffs.

Announced back in March, Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris will be launching on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, and date has no release estimate yet.

Here’s the Eugeo gameplay from Twitter, and another look on the spider boss fight with Kirito and Alice:
