Rainbow Six Siege Has Reached 50 Million Players

Rainbow Six Siege might be the biggest success story that not many people seem to talk about. After launching way back in December of 2015, the game has continued to grow into one of the best shooters on the market. Plus, it has finally reached over 50 million players.

Announced on the game’s official Twitter account, Ubisoft thanked their players for helping them reach their goal and made it clear that they are here to stay. You can check out the tweet below.


When the game first launched, it was met with pretty average reviews around the industry. However, year after year, Ubisoft has continued to expand and add to the game to flesh it out. Looking back at the vanilla release and to now, it is almost like night and day.

It just goes to show that just because a game isn’t doing so hot at launch, it is not the end of the world. Just take a look at No Man’s Sky. Many people despised the game at launch due to it being marketed in a shady way. However, plenty of players have grown to love the game after Hello Games continually put out expansions and updates.

Rainbow Six Siege is currently available for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Ubisoft is always expanding on the game and it continues to be one of the best tactical shooters on the market right now. Rainbow Six Siege Operation: Ember Rise Operators Discussed By Presentation Director

Formally revealed at the Six Major in Raleigh, North Carolina, Operation: Ember Rise brings a ton of new content to Rainbow Six Siege. This includes two new Operators, the Kanal map rework, a new Ranked system, and the introduction of the Battle Pass. After speaking with the Rainbow Six Siege Presentation Director Alex Karpazis, it is clear that this is one of the more unique and fun additions to come to the game.

Operation: Ember Rise introduces the attack Operator Amaru and defense Operator Goyo. Each one of these Operators brings a new ability that can potentially shake up the meta. In the case of Amaru, she is especially unique as the first Operator to have a mobility-focused ability with the Garra Hook.

When you first see the ability in action, it almost seems game-breaking. It is an entirely new way to infiltrate the defense that is fast-paced and reckless, the complete opposite characteristics of what you normally associate with Rainbow Six Siege. As Karpazis explains creating an Operator like Amaru, it is clear that her role in the game is to really shake up the flow of a match.

“She definitely changes the flow for sure, and that was the intention with her. We never had a gadget that didn’t really fit in a role. This is something that was new and it dealt with mobility,” Karpazis begins to explain. “This is all the way back in Year 3 Season 3, we had this idea and the original code name was Attack on Titan. But it really was to challenge how you approach objectives in terms of mobility.”

With such a game-changing character with such high-mobility, it begs the question: How did this affect map design? Operation: Ember Rise also brings a reworked Kanal map which is a great environment to showcase Amaru’s Garra Hook. But what about all the previous maps? It turns out that all the maps have received little tweaks to adhere to this new traversal tool.

“It was really a collaboration between character design and map design from the beginning, and that was from a global perspective,” says Karpazis. “Making sure that everything felt natural, that she could attach to ledges and windows. There are some little tweaks not only to Kanal but all of the maps.”

As one would expect, bringing in new Operators, regardless of how wild their abilities are, require some balancing to maintain the game’s competitive spirit. The new Operators need to have some kind of utility as a counter to pre-existing Operators but need to be countered so they aren’t broken. When it comes to Amaru, she is actually less about countering certain Operators, and more about being the “wild card” and shaking up the flow of the match. This is what Karpazis believes is her strength, as well as good counters against her:

“Well, Amaru doesn’t really counter anyone right now. She shakes things up. So, that’s her counter. The hard counter for her is Castle. She doesn’t break a Castle barricade. You need to have somebody on your team, either an Ash or someone who can destroy it, so she can reach those places. Or, if you bring the breach charge, she can use a breach charge on them but really slows you down and defeats the purpose. Also, trap Operators are great. If you’re laying traps on the windows that she is known to go up or maybe lay some traps around hatches you know she may try to jump up, that’s a great counter as well. Especially if the other team is not droning for it and Amaru is on her own.”

For Goyo, the new defense Operator, his ability is more traditional than Amaru. He can deploy several Volcan Shields, a deployable shield with an incendiary bomb on the back of it. When that red canister on the shield is destroyed, the shield also melts leaving the surrounding area engulfed in flames. Goyo is good at closing the gap between you and your opponent, but also has some hard counters you should look out for if you plan on playing as him.

“The best kind of counters are those that use the least amount of utility to trade it out. You want to deal with a Goyo shield as soon as possible,” says Karpazis. “So, once you drone and find out it’s a legit Goyo shield — not just a standard deployable shield — you want to either get line-of-sight from above or below so you can trigger it just with a bullet or maybe you can trade it out with Ash or Zofia’s ability at a range that can be quickly traded.”

You may have noticed that these two Operators have some inherent flaws that may seem offputting for those looking for new Operators to try out in Ranked. With Goyo’s easily disposable Volcan Shield and Amaru’s vulnerability when using the Garra Hook, they don’t seem like favorable picks in a competitive setting. Karpazis does assure that balancing the characters for competitive play was definitely in mind when designing Goya and Amaru.

“We bring in the pros and see what they’re feeling with how they play with them. And you see that with Amaru where, usually, 70 percent of the time, when she is jumping onto site out of nowhere and someone is there, she will lose that. This is because you can hear her coming, the time it takes for her to pull out her weapon is significant enough that there is that balance to allow defenders to deal with her.

When we’re talking about Goyo, we’re talking about an Operator that is kind of like Smoke; he is an alternative to Smoke but his shield can be detonated by anyone. For his own team, there is a lot of flexibility on how you share responsibilities. On the attacking team, they have a few more options to deal with Goyo’s than with Smoke. So, there is some inherent balancing there.”

Rainbow Six Siege Esports Director Says They Want Bring 100 Operators to the Game

With constant seasonal updates, Rainbow Six Siege has continued to grow its large roster of Operators at a consistent pace. It seems the roster is only going to grow as Ubisoft wants to bring 100 Operators to the game.

When speaking with Rainbow Six Siege Esports Director Wei Yue and Ubisoft’s Senior Director of Esports Che Chou, they discussed the inevitable acceptance of esports by the general public, as well as its role in prolonging the life of Rainbow Six Siege. “Really, our goal around Rainbow Six esports is to create an excellent and engaging program that keeps the game alive and interesting for 10 plus years,” says Chou. “All of this is in service to the game and its community.”

Yue continues to discuss the theme of a “10 plus” year plan for Rainbow Six Siege. “We want to be here in 10 years; we are here to stay,” says Yue. “We want to bring 100 Operators to the game, so we have a long way to go.”

With the release of the newest update, Operation: Ember Rise, Rainbow Six Siege now has a total of 50 Operators in its ever-growing roster (if you don’t count Recruit). That means they only need another 50 more to go to hit that goal. As everyone’s favorite 80’s frontman Jon Bon Jovi crooned on the song Living on a Prayer, “we’re halfway there.”

Amaru is the new attack Operator who uses the Garra Hook to zip up to windows and ledges with ease. Goyo is the new defense Operator who is armed with a few deployable shields with an incendiary grenade attached to it. You can check out our preview to see what we thought of the new update.

Rainbow Six Siege Planned for Next-Gen Platforms

In a recent interview with Rainbow Six Siege Brand Director Alexandre Remy, the future of the game, including sequel plans, its availability on next-gen platforms, and migration options have been unveiled.

Reported by Daily Star from the Rainbow Six Siege Pro League Series Finals in Milan, Ubisoft Montreal does not have plans for a sequel. “We don’t want a sequel whatsoever,” Remy remarks, stomping on any hopes for a new iteration of the popular shooter.

However, the team behind Rainbow Six Siege would like the game to come to next-gen consoles. The dream is to have every player can play together. “The reason behind this is we don’t want to segregate our community between the different platforms,” explains Remy. “In an ideal world tomorrow, we’d love players from every platform to be able to play together. We are approaching next-gen with the same spirit.”

What about players who have already purchased Rainbow Six Siege on a PS4 or Xbox One but want to move on to the next generation of consoles when that time comes? According to Remy, Ubisoft Montreal is trying to find a way to give players that choice. “We’ve been asking how can we make the player base of Siege today be able to migrate — if they want to migrate, that is — but also make this cheaper [than buying a new, next-gen copy of the game] as much as possible or through backwards compatibility”

In other Rainbow Six Siege news, the Year 4 Season 2 update dubbed Phantom Sight is upon us. As per usual, this will include two new Operators; this time around, the sharply dressed Warden and stealthy Nøkk will be joining the ever-growing list of Operators. Instead of a new map, Kafe Dostoyevsky will be getting a rework.

Rainbow Six Siege is available right now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Rainbow Six Siege New Operation Phantom Sight Revealed

The second season of Year 4 for Rainbow Six Siege has been formally revealed bringing two new operators, a reworked Kafe Dostoyevsky, and a few other tweaks and features.

Nøkk, a new stealthy attack operator that can disappear with the flip of a switch; that switch being the HEL gadget. Activating the glove attachment, which has a fairly limited time window, will make her invisible to the opposing operator’s observation tools, as well as reduce the amount of noise she makes. This means she will be virtually invisible when using devices such as drones, bulletproof cameras, and evil eyes.

However, the HEL gadget isn’t perfect. The effect will glitch any time she moves faster than normal speed or when she takes damage. Some devices, like Echo’s Yokai or Mozzie’s hacked drones, have a waveform effect that will make her visible. Even with her flaws, Nøkk can be utilized during flanking situations, getting the surprise jump on almost every defender.

The Warden, a dapper defender equipped with glasses that can see through smoke and remove flash that can be activated as many times as you can during a match. The effect is similar to Glaz, although it isn’t as effective since the glasses are not equipped with thermal detection. Too much movement will have an effect on how well you can see through smoke, so finding the perfect angle and limiting your movement is crucial.

Certain operators will be able to counter Warden with ease. Thatcher’s ability to disable gadgets can remove the glasses effect immediately. IQ’s ability to detect gadgets will make him an easy target to spot.

Announced back in February, instead of releasing a brand new map, Ubisoft is reworking a handful of maps. The first map rework is Kafe Dostoyevsky. This includes new bomb sites, making old bomb sites more viable, and making a handful of changes to make a more balanced map overall.

The Year 4 Season 2 update also improves on some of the already implemented features. Reverse friendly fire will receive improvements in how all types of damage will be reversed. For those who play ranked, Pick & Ban, 3-round rotations and the Bomb game mode will now be the standard for all ranked matches. New skins, the Lesion elite set, and an improved shop have also been implemented.

Lastly, a breakdown of all the operator balances, bug fixes, and general tweaks have been listed. That large list can be found here.

Those who own Rainbow Six Siege‘s Year 4 pass will get Season 2 content at launch. Everyone else will be able to get Warden and Nøkk a week after launch by using credits or renown.

Rainbow Six Siege Will Not Get a Battle Royale Mode According to Creative Director

I know what you’re thinking: “Rainbow Six Siege would make a great battle royale. If Tetris can do it, anyone can!” Well, I come to you bearing some bad news. Ubisoft will not be delving into the popular genre with its first-person shooter.

With franchises like Call of Duty and Titanfall tackling the battle royale genre, I spoke with Rainbow Six Siege Creative Director Xavier Marquis to see whether Ubisoft’s first-person shooter would be the next game to receive its own rendition of the popular mode. This is what Marquis had to say:

“No, I am not interested at all in a battle royale. The genre is doing a nice job but it’s not Siege. The equation of Siege comes from reality, like real CQB operations; it’s always a group trained to defend a specific place and an intervening group trained to intimidate and defeat the threat. This is the equation of Siege. I think the battle royale genre is too much of a stretch and I’m not sure it will be a plus for the game. So, we’ll try different things but no.”

I also spoke with Rainbow Six Siege Game Director Leroy Athanassoff to get their opinion on the matter. “Right now, there is no plan of adding a battle royale,” Athanassoff confirms. “But we want our events to be an important tool to experiment with gameplay.”

Just yesterday, it was announced the Rainbow Six Siege team will be split into different groups, with each group focusing on a certain matter that may need improvement such as player toxicity, Operator balancing, and map reworks. This also included a team dedicated to in-game events; this group would help tailor unique experiences, such as the Mad House event from last year, in order to bring something new to Siege as well as experiment with different gameplay mechanics that could potentially help improve the game. With that in mind, an in-game event seemed like a good place for a battle royale mode to make its way to the game.

It is pretty safe to say a battle royale mode will not be added to Rainbow Six Siege any time soon. What will be added pretty soon are two new Operators and a new map thanks to the Year 4 Season 1 update, Operation: Burnt Horizon. Rainbow Six Siege Tease Operation Burnt Horizon

Ubisoft has teased its upcoming Aussie-themed Year Four Season One update Operation Burnt Horizon for its popular shooter Rainbow Six Siege.

The new update, like every season update, will include two operators. According to Ubisoft, the first operator will be an Attacker who is”just there to get the job done” with the second being a Defender who is “in it for the guts and glory.” Although there are no specifics on the new operators, the Attacker will have a device that will “keep roaming Defenders on their toes” while the Defender will have an ability that will “leave Attackers at a bit of a loss.”

Since the theme this time around is centered around Australia, the new map will be set in a service station down under. There isn’t much to go on but there will be a gift shop and a fast food count, so you know, get excited.

Although Ubisoft is being tight-lipped about Operation Burnt Horizon, we may have got our first look of the two operators. According to the Reddit post from Doc Main, assets were found on the Rainbow Six Siege website naming the characters Mozzie and Gridlock. Whether these names or models are final or even real is not yet known.

Operation Burnt Horizon will be formally revealed on February 17 during the Six Invitational in Montreal. Between February 15 and February 17, 16 of the best Rainbow Six Siege teams will compete to become the World Champion and win the largest prize pool in the game’s history. Here are all 16 teams, as well as their corresponding groups:

The last update that came to Rainbow Six Siege was Year Three Season Four’s Operation Wind Bastion. This brought two Operators Kaid and Nomad as well as the Fortress map in Morocco. It also brought Pro Team BDUs and Headgears, new shop navigational display and a fullscreen view for weapons.

Rainbow Six Siege is available for Xbox One, PS4, and PC right now.

Rainbow Six Siege: Operation Para Bellum Coming Next Month

Ubisoft announced Operation Para Bellum for Rainbow Six Siege will be available next month giving players another reason to keep playing the popular multiplayer-centric first-person shooter. A new video flaunting the new map and Operators was also revealed.

Operation Para Bellum will see the release of a brand new map, Villa, set in the Italian countryside, as well as two Italian G.I.S. Operators, Alibi and Maestro. Alibi is an infiltration specialist with the ability to drop up to three holograms used to confuse and mark the enemy. Maestro will have a remote access turret that is bulletproof, can see through smoke, and shoots low-powered lasers; it can only be destroyed using an explosive, destroying the surface it is planted on, or Sledge’s hammer.

The new update will also introduce the “Pick & Ban” system that will allow you to pick an Operator to ban that may throw off your opposition’s initial strategy. This new feature will certainly change the meta of competitive play in some significant ways.

Rainbow Six Siege Year 3 Content Roadmap Announced

Rainbow Six Siege is a game that does content right; to that effect, it’s bringing even more content nearly three years after its release. Today, the game’s development team announced their “Year 3” content and support timeline, including eight new operators and two new maps as well as the new Outbreak event.

Year 3 is set to begin with Operation Chimera, which introduces two brand new operators as well as the Outbreak event. The operators are biohazard specialists and will have special roles in the game’s first ever co-op event. Outbreak will last for four weeks and will give players the chance to earn exclusive cosmetics. The full event reveal will take place at the Six Invitational 2018 in Montreal.

In addition to the two new maps, season three of this year will see one map reworked with new level design and new artwork. More reveals are bound to happen in the next few maps regarding what the new and reworked maps may look like, as well as what kind of operators we may be seeing in Season One and beyond.
