Nippon Ichi Software and Acquire Announce Survival Game Jinrui no Minasama e, Launches This May in Japan

Update: New information from Famitsu has been added along with portraits for each character, and new screenshots.

Nippon Ichi Software and Acquire revealed a brand new game: Jinrui no Minasama e.

The announcement was made through Famitsu and follows multiple days of teasing with images showing illustrations of sprouting grass.

Jinrui no Minasama e, which can be translated to “To All of Mankind” will be releasing for PlayStation 4 and Switch in Japan. Jinrui no Minasama e seems to be featuring five young girls, as they try to survive in a post-apocalyptic Akihabara covered with vegetation.

Nippon Ichi Software describes Jinrui no Minasama e as a “survival adventure” game. The appellation “adventure” suggests Jinrui no Minasama e will be a similar experience to a visual novel, with a heavy focus on story and characters rather than action-packed gameplay.

Famitsu published its usual small sized preview screenshots for the game:

Judging from the first screenshots, it seems the game will let players control one of the girls and freely explore the devastated city in 3D. It seems like the game is organized in days, with a limited number of hours being available for exploration each day. The timer at the top left indicates “12 hours left”. The button shortcuts also include a “Display your next destination/objective” function. A map function is available as well.

This second screenshot seems to be a report from a character who was sent fishing by the player. It seems players will be able to ask the characters to perform various tasks, like gathering food, to help with the girls’ survival.

The third and final preview screenshot revealed by Famitsu shows two girls chatting. Like with most Japanese games, Jinrui no Minasama e will have its important story events pictured with CG Illustrations.

For now, the game makes me think of the Lost in Blue series but we don’t really know much. Keep in mind nearly nothing was revealed about Jinrui no Minasama e’s story and gameplay for now, and that most of the remarks in this article are speculation made from the first screenshots.

Jinrui no Minasama e is the third game for PS4 and Switch announced by Nippon Ichi Software these past few months, following Destiny Connect and Satsujin Tantei Jack the Ripper. None of the games have been announced in the west for now.

More information on Jinrui no Minasama e will be available after Famitsu releases on Thursday midnight JST. This article will be updated then, so stay tuned.

Here’s the new information from Famitsu:

Starting with the release date: Jinrui no Minasama e will launch in Japan on May 30, 2019, on PS4 and Switch.

Jinrui no Minasama e’s Producer is Gen Suganuma, and the Character Designer is Yu Akinashi. The game is currently at 80% of its development.

Jinrui no Minasama e will not feature a single male character and will depict the everyday lives of cute girls who try surviving in a post-apocalyptic Akihabara. You’ll get to see many aspects of their lives, including seeing them barge into each other when showering.

Here’s the initial story pitch of Jinrui no Minasama e: Five girls were sightseeing in Akihabara and spent the night at a hotel. When they woke up, they realized they’re now in a post-apocalyptic world, in a devasted and deserted Akihabara, vegetation wildly growing over the ruins. The five girls will try to adapt to their new survival life by exploring Akihabara, finding useful tools, hunting animals, farming, and fishing in Kanda River.

Here are the five girls’ profiles, from left to right:

Kyouka Shintou, voiced by Mana Sato. She’s the main character controlled by players.
A girl who’s always cheerful, and the mood-maker of the group. She’s an anime and manga otaku, who’d rather read manga than read anything else.

Isana Shouni, voiced by Yukino Tsubaki.
A gentle girl who takes care of everyone, and is like the mother of the group, which is also probably because of her chest size. She’s very good at cooking and the main reason why they’re not starving.

Erina Kashi, voiced by Nanahira.
She’s a gamer addicted to smartphone and social games. She’s pretty anxious about how she can’t get her daily login bonuses anymore. She often makes game-related jokes and references.

Kazumi Komatsu, voiced by Sana Hoshimori.
A very lively and cheerful girl, just like Kyouka. She doesn’t get depressed by the predicament they’re in, and she’s also the strongest of the group when it comes to physical strength. She lives from day to day and is very carefree. She’s basically everyone’s big sister in the group.

Yuyuko Oura voiced by Mina Nakazawa.
A Japanese girl with a French grandparent. She always loved to read, which made her learn a lot of things. She’s saved the group multiple times with her knowledge.

Jinrui no Minasama e seems pretty interesting. Though I usually dislike works that pander to what I call “male purity otaku” like this, who’d get mad at the slightest indication that the female character they like is interacting with a male character, but will wait for the game to release before judging it. There’s also the fact that Octopath Traveler, Acquire’s latest game, has a lot of problems in my opinion.

The gallery below includes rough drafts for the illustrations on Jinrui no Minasama e‘s shop specific pre-order goods, which are surprisingly tame, and screenshots, from Famitsu. Direct-feed screenshots will be released at a later date.

JRPG Destiny Connect by Nippon Ichi Software Gets First Live Gameplay

During the 32nd Yurutto Nippon Ichi stream, Nippon Ichi Software revealed for the first time some live gameplay for Destiny Connect, upcoming turn-based RPG with robots and time travel.

We got to see Destiny Connect‘s title screen, the opening movie and a bit of the game’s introduction. As we already reported, Destiny Connect‘s story starts on the last day of 1999, with protagonist Sherry about to participate at the end of the millennium festival in Clockney, her industrial hometown with a gear motif. Everyone’s enjoying themselves when time suddenly stops and Sherry is attacked by weird robots. As she finds refuge in her father’s study, she discovers Isaac, a robot capable of time travel. Together with her friends, Sherry travels in time to try and prevent the time stop phenomenon.

The gameplay sequence also shows the game’s main menu and the first battle of the game, which acts as a tutorial, brought in a really cool way: Sherry’s watching a movie on TV, and that movie’s protagonist, which was already revealed to play an important part in the story, starts a battle. That movie is shown every year in the game’s world and is basically the Castle in the Sky of Destiny Connect‘s world. In Japan, either before the end of the year or right after, Studio Ghibli’s Castle in the Sky is shown on TV, and every year it breaks Twitter records as everyone in Japan tweets “バルス” during the movie’s climax.

Destiny Connect‘s 3D art direction is great, though I admit it might not be for everyone. Nippon Ichi Software’s President Sohei Niikawa, present on stream, also jokingly said Nippon Ichi Software didn’t do many full 3D games in the past, so most people might not even realize Destiny Connect is a Nippon Ichi Software game when seeing it. Nippon Ichi Software does entertainment, and one of the basics of entertainment is being able to surprise people, hecen why games like Destiny Connect exists.

I’m looking forward to Destiny Connect as I really want to know if it’ll manage to be as good as Game Director Yoshihiko Toda wants it to be. Back when the game was first announced in Famitsu, Toda said he’d like Destiny Connect to connect with 30+ years old people of his era. Toda wants Destiny Connect to be a good Snes RPG but made with current technology and with 3D graphics. Multiple games these past years have claimed to hold similar or even bigger ambitions, and yet completely failed in my opinion, from I am Setsuna to Octopath Traveler, so I hope Destiny Connect won’t suffer the same fate. Destiny Connect was supposed to launch at the end of February, but the game got slightly delayed. You can check the game’s first trailer and screenshots, and here’s the first full-length trailer, showing parts of the story and battles. We’ve also covered the details on the characters Sherry will meet in the past, which includes a younger version of her mom, and how to customize Isaac the robot.

Destiny Connect wasn’t announced in the west for now but NIS America should definitely bring it over. Niikawa mentioned how they tried to make Destiny Connect‘s character design similar to a Disney movie, instead of going for Japanese-looking characters, so that way, more people around the world can relate to Sherry. He jokingly added that maybe they should have made a 3D anime instead of a game, something a game company president shouldn’t be saying.

Serial Killer Detective Jack the Ripper Announced by Nippon Ichi Software

Today on January 28, Nippon Ichi Software revealed a brand new game, “Satsujin Tantei Jack the Ripper”, which can be translated to Serial Killer Detective Jack the Ripper. The game will release on April 25 in Japan, for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. The game was first revealed the same day, in Dengeki PlayStation magazine Vol.672.

For now, Nippon Ichi Software didn’t reveal much about Serial Killer Detective Jack the Ripper, besides the fact that the game is an “Adventure” game, meaning it’s a visual novel or something very similar. We’ve got some visuals and a pitch of the game’s story as well.

Serial Killer Detective Jack the Ripper‘s protagonist is a young man named Arthur Hewitt, a detective with an office based in London. As he investigates a serial killer case, he ends up discovering a shocking fact, which makes him see illusions of someone claiming to be Jack the Ripper.

In Serial Killer Detective Jack the Ripper, the real Jack the Ripper was arrested and executed two years prior to the beginning of the story, and yet Arthur starts seeing visions of Jack appearing before him.

Serial Killer Detective Jack the Ripper‘s official site, still in teaser mode, has various quotes appearing on it, such as: “Am I walking the correct path?”, or  “criminals shouldn’t be executed, but rehabilitated and reintegrated into society”.

As they control Arthur, players will need to decide whether to act as a proper detective and prioritize catching criminals, or letting Arthur’s desires take over, as he’s seemingly possessed by Jack the Ripper, and execute the criminals. Your choices will affect the game’s story, and there are multiple endings.

Arthur Hewitt is voiced by Yusuke Hirooka.

More characters were also revealed:

  • Charlotte Peaceley, a blonde police officer, voiced by Aiko Yamasaki
  • Lori Godspeed, a red-haired girl, voiced by Mituski Natsukawa
  • Sophie, a girl voiced by Yuki Kawakami.

Multiple other voice actors have tweeted they’re in the game, including Kiyohiro Yamaguchi, but we don’t know their characters yet.

The game basically follows a concept many pieces of fiction already experimented with, like Dexter, so it’ll be interesting to see what Nippon Ichi Software does with it. The game was only announced in Japan for now but hopefully, it’ll receive a localization. More information will be coming soon on the game’s official twitter.

Disgaea 1 Complete Review — Grinding Is Love, Grinding Is Life

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness released over 15 years ago on PlayStation 2, and now players who haven’t experienced the cult-classic strategy role-playing game’s origin title can go back and check it out for themselves on Nintendo Switch and PS4 with Disgaea 1 Complete. I’ve had minimal experience with the series myself, only playing 2015’s Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance. With that, I was eager to look back and see where the series came from and how it has evolved since its original conception.

It was a surprisingly familiar experience going from Disgaea 5 to Disgaea 1 Complete. Of course, both games do stem from the same series, but I expected the first game to be entirely different from the fifth. In Disgaea, players are placed in a hub world where everything outside of combat will be done. On the outside looking in, Disgaea may seem like a light-hearted game that wouldn’t require much brain power, but you’d be entirely wrong to think that way.

Many mechanics need to be considered in combat. What lineup of characters you’ll be using, who needs to level up, who works well together, what do my characters have equipped, will this enemy be able to damage me from here, etc. It can be quite an overwhelming experience, but it’s one that can feel quite rewarding when all’s said and done.

The story of Disgaea 1 Complete is pretty out there at times. But it ultimately comes together better than I expected. It’s not anything to write home about, but it’s interesting nonetheless. The main character is named Laharl, who is the son of King Krichevskoy. After sleeping for two years, Laharl wakes up to find that his father has died, and so he hopes to become the new Overlord of the Netherworld

Disgaea 1 Complete

This may be going into spoiler territory, but considering this is the first game in a series that’s on game five, I think it’s okay to talk about. Around mid-game, Laharl discovers that there are many overlords across many netherworlds and this sort of becomes the basis for the Disgaea series as a whole. I thought it was a pretty cool way of connecting the multitude of characters from the entire series.

Throughout your journey, you’ll meet a whole slew of characters that’ll help you or try and hurt you along the way. There’s nobody in the first game that really stuck out to me besides Flone just because she’s so damn adorable. I also found Laharl to be a relatively annoying protagonist who I didn’t care much about. But on top of the main cast, you’ll also be crafting different characters and monsters to fight alongside you. While they don’t add anything to the story, the game does let you name them and customize them a little bit. This adds a bit of a personal layer to Disgaea’s world, and it’s something that I enjoyed quite a lot.

Disgaea 1 Complete

Combat is where you’ll be spending a good chunk of your time in Disgaea 1 Complete, as every character can be leveled from 1 to 999. You’ll be doing a lot of grinding. This is sort of where the game started to drag for me, as there are points where you’ll have to go back and level up your characters, and the process can sometimes feel very slow and monotonous. With this being an SRPG, many of the levels you go back to play out the same way every time, which can become quite dull when you have to grind. Of course, if you know this series, then you know the Item World which is a much more refreshing area to grind in my opinion, as it’ll also reap you some good benefits.

If you’re unfamiliar with Item World, it’s actually a fascinating idea. Just about every single item in Disgaea can be entered by your party members. From there you go through various floors, taking out enemies and leveling up. As you go through floors, your item also levels up, in return increasing its power and usefulness. So while players are going to farm the game’s main missions for the bonuses they can achieve upon completion and execution, the Item World is a great place to grant your party even more benefits. Disgaea does this cool thing where really everything you do enhances how your party grows and fights.

Disgaea 1 Complete

Speaking of fights, there are many strategies and ways in which players can go about taking out enemies. There’s a large variety of classes and characters that use different skills and weapons. While there are many skills you can use in Disgaea 1 Complete, positioning your characters correctly is also essential as they can benefit one another substantially in combat. There’s really a whole bunch of different gameplay mechanics at your disposal, and it’s no wonder the series has become so popular amongst SRPG fans.

With the level cap being so high, your characters will be able to dish out massive damage. I’ve never really been a massive proponent of JRPGs that have high damage and levels for the sake of them being there. Often it can just be hard to know the scale of your attacks and because of this, progression can sometimes feel less rewarding to me. In comparison, games that have a much smaller scale when it comes to levels and damage really do give me personally a better sense of progression, where I can see a huge difference in my characters from level 20 to 40 in a game like Final Fantasy, compared to something like characters that are level 300 in Disgaea. This is more of a personal gripe I’ve always had with the series, but it’s not one that hampers the gameplay for me in any sort of way.

Disgaea 1 Complete

Graphically, Disgaea 1 Complete is on par with the more modern Disgaea titles. It’s a huge step up from the original PlayStation 2 title. The only problem I had with visuals was sometimes working the camera around some wonky map design. Because the camera is set to four different angles, there were times when it was a little tricky managing so much going on. One thing I did appreciate was how the game breaks up chapters. It does it in a way that’s like watching an anime: a character named Etna narrates what’s going to happen next in the series, and it’s done in a very comical, over-the-top, kind of way. I found myself actually laughing during these moments.

If you haven’t played Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, and you’re a fan of some of the later titles, this is a great game to try. If you have played the first title before, this may not be a valuable purchase to you as many of the new additions in Complete are minor outside of the visual quality. I think Switch owners will find this title to be the most ideal as grinding when you have some free time is a lot of fun. Overall, I’m happy I got a chance to see this longrunning series’ early history with Disgaea 1 Complete, and I look forward to seeing where the games go next.

Liar Princess and the Blind Prince Gets New Trailer Revealing Charming Song by Ar Tonelico Singer

Today Nippon Ichi Software released the latest trailer of its upcoming game Liar Princess and the Blind Prince.

The trailer showcases a look at the story of the title, portrayed in its lovely art style reminiscent of an illustration book for children with just a tiny bit of unsettling creepiness added.

Quite interestingly, we also get the reveal of the theme song performed by Akiko Shikata. Veteran JRPG fans will probably recognize her voice quite easily, as she is well known for her work on the Ar Tonelico series.

I don’t know about you, but the song nailed itself into my brain, and I doubt it’ll leave any time soon.

Liar Princess and the Blind Prince Gets New Trailer Showing Gameplay and Story Details

Nippon Ichi Software launched a new trailer for their upcoming puzzle adventure Liar Princess and the Blind Prince.

The new trailer gives further details in the game’s story and characters as it shows off some of the story scenes and platforming systems. Additionally, players get a peek at some of the combat elements where the wolf leaves the prince alone to cut down some enemies without him knowing.

Liar Princess and the Blind Prince tells the story of a wolf who made a deal with a witch that would turn her into a princess in order to help a prince. Although there was a catch for this favor, the wolf seems to enjoy helping the prince, even though she is lying to him. Gameplay systems allow the player to change forms as well as complete puzzles in order to progress the story.

Also, the game has a stage skipping option that allows players to skip puzzles or level if they just prefer hearing the story. However, stages can be replayed at any time and also contain secret items and side quest missions.

Liar Princess and the Blind Prince was announced in January and is scheduled for a release on May 31st, 2018 for PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PS Vita in Japan.
