Microids’ Blacksad Adaptation Gets Delayed to November

Microids, the developer behind the Syberia series, is flexing their publishing skills lately. They’re set to release the XIII remake this fall and were planning to put out an adaptation of the popular graphic novel Blacksad in September. Unfortunately, the team announced today that the release of Blacksad: Under the Skin is being pushed back a few months.

Thankfully the delay isn’t too long. It will hopefully give the team enough time to polish the game up and give players the best possible product. This delay isn’t too concerning. In all the material they’ve released so far, the game has looked very good.

To assuage any fears, the team also put out the first part of their “making of” feature series. This short video gives a quick look at some of the thought processes behind how they translated the fan-favorite graphic novel to a 3D world. It’s clear that the team at Pendulo Studios has a reverence for the source material. Which leaves me confident that they can make a product that will delight both old and new fans.

Personally, I’m hoping that Blacksad takes notes from TellTale’s The Wolf Among Us. Unfortunately, that franchise will (likely) never get a second release, so it would be great if this could scratch a similar itch. The noir-style detective game is something I will always support.

Blacksad: Under the Skin will be out on Mac, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One on November 5. Keep your eyes on DualShockers for all your indie news.

Blacksad: Under the Skin Puts You in the Shoes of a Detective Cat on September 26

Blacksad: Under the Skin is an upcoming narrative-adventure game set in the Blacksad comic book universe. The game tells a completely new story but will feature the film noir style and anthropomorphic animals that are central to the comic. Check out the new story trailer below.

Blacksad follows the exploits of a gumshoe black cat named John Blacksad as he solves a thrilling case in 1950s New York City. The game is being developed by Pendulo Studios and YS Interactive and published by Microids. And the story being told looks appropriately dark.

The game opens with Joe Dunn, the owner of an NYC boxing club, found dead. Bobby Yale, the rising boxing star he trained, has gone missing. And so, when Dunn’s daughter takes over the club, she calls on Blacksad to find out where Yale has gone.

What follows is a tale full of intrigue. As Blacksad, you will engage in a series of investigations. Those use puzzles, quick time events, and multiple-choice dialog to make up the main thrust of the gameplay. You’ll be interacting with more than 30 characters whose relationship with Blacksad can change depending on the choices the player makes.

The developers really seem to have captured the style of the comic, at least in this trailer. The style seems appropriately dark and gritty. The dialog is raspy and gruff. The jazz music is totally on point. If the gameplay delivers, this could turn into a solid game in a vein similar to Telltale’s The Wolf Among Us or Rockstar’s LA Noire.

Blacksad: Under the Skin will be out on September 26, 2019, for Mac, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
