Remnant: From the Ashes Gets a Free Dungeon Today


Gunfire Games and Perfect World Entertainment released Remnant: From the Ashes for PC, PS4, Xbox One back in August, and while I was not the biggest fan of the game, a passionate community has still formed around the game. As an online-focused title, Remnant: From the Ashes needs a healthy amount of post-launch content to stay relevant, even though its developer was recently purchased by THQ Nordic. On September 12, the game received a new Adventure Mode and today a free dungeon was added to Remnant: From Ashes. 

If you update and play Remnant: From the Ashes from today onwards, you will gain access to a dungeon called Leto’s Lab. It will appear both in the aforementioned Adventure Mode and will even be dynamically spawned in the main campaign. The enemies of this dungeon will be the titular doctor’s experiments, though there are also several puzzles to solve and the ultimate reward of a secret armor set.

For those interested, this is the official backstory for the map. “Leto’s Lab takes you on a quest through Research Station Alpha. The lab was established to research the mysterious red crystals, with the initial goal of using them as a source of infinite energy. The head researcher, Leto Apostolakis, theorized the crystals could be used for something else – to bridge space-time for near-instantaneous travel. He was the one to unlock the World Stone on Ward 16 allowing mankind to take their first fledgling trips to other worlds. Leto’s experiments quickly diverged from their initial goal as he started using the World Stones to fuel a series of dubious experiments. The lab continued operating for months after the Root invaded, but was ultimately forced to evacuate when one of Leto’s experiments went awry.”

Remnant: From the Ashes Review — It’s Dangerous to Go Alone


Gunfire Games and Perfect World Entertainment’s Remnant: From the Ashes somehow manages to feel like several games that I have played while also feeling quite original at the same time. It’s a cooperative third-person shooter like Tom Clancy’s The Division, but it’s also a Soulslike. Its world is post-apocalyptic, but stands out with plant-based foes. As we near the end of this console generation, games are getting more experimental in the genres that they are mixing, and Remnant: From the Ashes is a great example of that.

While it, unfortunately, does not always manage to blend these elements from other games in the best way possible, there is still a neat experience to be had here. Remnant: From the Ashes’ unique world, good gunplay, and plethora of fun situations during multiplayer are great draws for those looking for a fresh cooperative game to add to their lineup with two other friends. Just be aware that if you plan on going through Remnant: From the Ashes’ root-infested world alone, a lot more of its cracks start to show.

Remnant should get credit for its unique world, which is not like anything else I’ve seen. The world is in a post-apocalyptic state, but it has been destroyed by a plant-based race known as The Root. Grotesque, horrific creatures roam the world now, and it isn’t uncommon to get sickly in battle thanks to root rot. While some early areas can be dull, others that have been taken back by nature in a less than desirable way are cool to explore. The player character is trying to save Ward 13, the main base of operations in the game, by finding Ward 13’s Founder, who has gone missing, along with destroying the heart of The Root.

This is a cool angle to a post-apocalyptic world that I have never experienced and helps Remnant: From the Ashes stand out among other cooperative games with more standard or generic worlds. That being said, the early parts of the game are quite exposition-heavy and the first areas players go to are drab gray and brown cities and tunnels, which makes Remnant: From the Ashes come off at first as much more generic than it actually is. Once the areas and enemies start getting more fantastical and colorful though, players will really start to dig into the game’s interesting world.

As a game though, Remnant: From the Ashes does not shy away from the fact that it is inspired by Dark Souls. Still, it is able to differentiate itself from the plethora of other Soulslikes thanks to its cooperative gameplay, procedurally generated environments, and focus on shooting. While you can’t jump into cooperative action right away, it’s pretty fun once you do. The high difficulty makes discussion and planning crucial, and the netcode is extremely solid even with the occasional loading freeze before important events.

Like any multiplayer game, some funny moments are bound to emerge as well, intentional or not, like when one of the shopkeepers greeted my multiplayer partner Rachael Fiddis by saying “Ho!” and we couldn’t stop laughing. The procedurally generated environments also ensure that hopping into another person’s game is always different and interesting, even if the way progress carries over from multiplayer to solo play is somewhat clunky.

Remnant: From the Ashes’ guns also feel great and much more visceral to use than in most third-person action games. The deep upgrade system and a variety of weapons should also keep players enthralled for quite a bit. The only real gripe with combat is that playing as a melee character felt a bit too risky due to the Soulslike difficulty. This is something entirely new from Gunfire Games, so third-person shooters are something I’d like to see them tackle again in the future, even if they are probably locked into making Darksiders games for THQ Nordic now.

At the same time, Remnant: From the Ashes does lose a bit of the nuance Dark Souls had because of this unique mix of features. When playing with friends, you’re more likely to not pay as much attention to the cryptic storytelling that Soulslikes thrive in. The lack of waypoints and labyrinthine design of some areas can also make it difficult for a group of players to maintain a clear direction. Meanwhile, procedurally generated environments are great for a cooperative game, but also causes Remnant: From the Ashes’ areas to lose the more intricate design that makes the Souls games so enthralling.

Then with combat, scenarios built for multiplayer make solo play much less fun. Especially in the early game, areas can feel insurmountable thanks to that Soulslike design. Instead of being fun and tempting to jump back into, it can just be frustrating to get through the early game areas, which are also some of the least pretty. Even with the multiplayer issues listed above, I highly recommend that you go into Remnant: From the Ashes with friends or at least play with others online as it is not as fun and definitely more dangerous and frustrating to go it alone.

Remnant: From the Ashes is an ambitious title and a fairly unique one at that, it just does not always stick the landing. It’s a multiplayer game that you need to stick with for quite a while before you can really sink your teeth into it and have fun in its fantastical areas, and even then, it is always better with friends. While it may pale in comparison to other Soulslikes, it does succeed as a third-person shooter.

Interesting genre mashups like this don’t come along often, probably because they aren’t always for everyone, but the only way the industry will find cool new genre mixes or avenues to explore is with unique titles like this. If this particular quirky mix of a cooperative shooter and Soulslike set in a post-apocalyptic world piques your interest, Remnant: From the Ashes may be worth checking out.

THQ Nordic is Promising to Reveal 3 New Games Over the Next 3 Days


We’re in the thick of it now. With just a few days to go until E3 kicks off with a string of livestreams and press conferences, announcements aplenty are starting to crop up. If you take your attention away from the Pokemon Sword and Shield Direct and Google Stadia presentation going on over the next few days, THQ Nordic is promising to reveal three new games.

Dubbed THQ Nordic 3 on 3, this string of announcements will take place over the course of three days. The first reveal will happen at 10am ET on June 5, the second will take place at 2pm ET on June 6, and the final major THQ Nordic announcement will occur at 2pm ET on June 7. As THQ Nordic is a publisher with over 48 unannounced games actively in development, there are a lot of possibilities when it comes to what will be revealed.

The most likely game to unveiled over the next few days is a new Darksiders game. An E3 Coliseum panel about the future of the series has already been announced, so I would be surprised if THQ Nordic decided no the reveal this new Darksiders game this week. A new Red Faction game was also listed on Nvidia’s website, so that could be one of the announcements. The third title is the one that is up in the air the most, though a rumor from Comicbook.com suggests that a new Destroy All Humans game will be revealed.

Keep in mind that those three reveals are pure speculation on my part; in fact, it is entirely possible that THQ Nordic shows off three games that have gone completely unheard of up until this point. Of course, you can expect DualShockers to let you know about all three of these titles as they are revealed by THQ Nordic.

Remnant: From the Ashes Hits PC, PS4, and Xbox One in August


Remnant: From the Ashes is the next title from Gunfire Games, the developer behind 2018’s Darksiders III, and Perfect World, the publisher that just brought Hob to Nintendo Switch with the help of Panic Button. Today, the pair confirmed that their third person shooter survival game will be coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One on August 20.

Alongside that “Can You Survive?” trailer, the developers also went into more depth about what is featured within the game while also giving some development sentiments. Remnant: From the Ashes is set to support multiplayer with up to three players, though it will be via a host-based connection. It will be possible to get through the whole game alone, though the developers are saying that doing so is a bit harder.

The final game will include over 100 different enemies and 20 bosses at launch, all of which will have different attacks and tactics. Progression is gear based, but things shouldn’t get stale as worlds and the items they contain are randomized with each run. Remnant: From the Ashes is “one of the studio’s most ambitious projects” according to Gunfire Games Co-Founder David Adams. He says this because “it challenges how we traditionally play with design, to create the game’s signature dynamically-generated environments.”

That being said, he thinks the development team has settled on a game that will “thrill players with intense gunplay, endless replayability and vast secrets for them to uncover.” Yoon Im, Senior Vice President of Global Publishing at Perfect World Entertainment, also reflected on Remnant: From the Ashes’ development alongside today’s release date announcement, saying “Gunfire’s vision for a survival-action shooter, with exciting moment-to-moment gameplay, was one we knew we had to help bring to life…Remnant: From the Ashes will deliver a fresh experience for fans of challenging combat scenarios and rewarding survival-action co-op gameplay.”

First Two Darksiders Games Have Now Received 4K Enhancements on Xbox One X


Darksiders III is finally slated to release later this month but ahead of that time, THQ Nordic has revisited the first two entries in the series and updated them for those who own Microsoft’s premium console.

Darksiders: Warmastered Edition and Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition will both be receiving new updates that will allow those who own each game on Xbox One X to experience each entry with new 4K visuals. Darksiders: Warmastered Edition has received its new update today while the 4K patch for Darksiders II will be arriving later this month.

In addition, if you pre-order Darksiders III right now, you’ll be able to download Darksiders: Warmastered Edition immediately. If you pre-order the Blades & Whips Edition of Darksiders III from the Microsoft Store, you’ll then be able to receive both Darksiders: Warmastered Edition and Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition. This is a pretty great deal for those that have never played the Darksiders series or those who are looking to return before the newest entry in the series arrives.
