Romero Games Partners with Paradox Interactive on Strategy Game


John Romero (of DOOM, Wolfenstein 3D, and Quake fame) and his Romero Games studio are partnering with Paradox Interactive to make a new strategy game based on an original IP. It’s an interesting move given Romero’s legendary status as one of the father’s of the FPS, but he’s certainly partnered with the right studio for a strategy title.

Paradox has been publishing strategy titles since 1997. Its catalog includes hits like Cities: Skylines, Crusader Kings II, Stellaris, and last year’s Battletech. There really aren’t many other studios you’d want to partner with for your first strategy title.

As mentioned, Romero Games has quite the pedigree behind its founders. John Romero and his wife Brenda Romero (Jagged Alliance and Wizardry 8) have both been successful in the industry for decades. That said, their new studio is still unproven. Romero Games has only released a few small mobile titles and the SIGIL megawad for DOOM.

It will be interesting to see what John Romero does in the strategy genre. Obviously, his biggest hits have come in the FPS world, so this is new territory for him and his team. Can he have success outside of the genre he helped pioneer?

The big positive for Romero Games is Brenda Romero’s experience writing for fantasy games like Wizardry 8 and Jagged Alliance 2. Her experience in the field should help the team craft a compelling story, at the very least.

This partnership looks a little strange on the surface, given Romero’s history. We’ll know if they can make it work when Romero Games and Paradox Interactive announce more details.

Cities: Skylines – Xbox One Edition Receives Free Mod Content in New Update


Fallout 4 attempted to pave the way for more mod availability on consoles after its launch, but we unfortunately never really saw them take shape due to the more regulatory nature of console marketplaces. That being said, Paradox Interactive and Tantalus Media are taking a stab at it today on Xbox One, adding mods via a free update to that version of Cities: Skylines.

These mods were curated by both the Cities: Skylines community and the developers themselves, so they should be of high quality. According to Paradox Interactive, this first wave of things like building models and unique items to the Xbox One version of the game. These mods are available on console for free and were added with every modder’s permission. Sandra Neudinger, Product Manager at Paradox Interactive, had the following to say about bringing modes to the Xbox One version of Cities: Skylines:

“Mod content is one of the core features that Paradox fans have come to expect from our games, and we’ve always valued our users’ creativity as one of the best parts of our community. We’ve been working together with Tantalus to see if there was a way to bring mods to our console players that was as enjoyable as it has been on other platforms, and with help from the Xbox team, we’re ready to let our fans give mods a try in Cities: Skylines. If things keep going well, we’re eager to see which mods may appear in the future as we keep testing and working on this content!”

Paradox also revealed the Cites: Skylines Content Creator pack alongside this announcement, which will come to PS4 and Xbox One on March 6. This DLC pack introduces new buildings and styles to the game that were worked on by some notable Cities: Skylines modders on PC.

Cities: Skylines is currently available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with the Content Creator Pack arriving on consoles on March 6.
