Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings Review — Needs More Materials

Ever since the beginning of the Arland Trilogy in 2010, I have been a fan of the Atelier series. The game provides a sense of relaxation that other RPGs don’t offer due to their emotionally heavy story or dark setting. The Atelier series has seen many iterations and improvements to the core systems over the years but has held on to its synthesis roots and hours of item collecting.

Fans now find themselves at the end of the Mysterious Trilogy, three games that follow a different main protagonist, with the release of Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings in the west. The game introduces Lydie and Suelle to the series as well as brings back the previous protagonists to tie up any loose ends and take players a brand new adventure. As an entry in the Atelier series, Atelier Lydie & Suelle does a lot right to include all the core ingredients of an Atelier game. However, the game seems like a step away from features introduced in Atelier Firis: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Journey, which for me was the most significant disappointment.

The story of Atelier Lydie & Suelle begins by introducing the twin sister alchemists, Lydie and Suelle Marlen, as we learn about their money troubles at home. Evidentally, their father has a tough time saving and can be somewhat immature at times to the point where the girls take the responsibility or running the household. With the skills of alchemy, the girls work together to complete small quests for the townspeople and get by with the little money they receive in return. Sharing a dream to become better alchemists, the two enter a town competition to show off their alchemy skills and get rich while they’re at it.

Unlike previous entries in the  Atelier Mysterious series, it’s clear from the very beginning that something isn’t right about the competition and you are left with playing through the story until the reveal. The story does have some twists and notable moments, but it’s definitely the twins that usually steal the show during dialog scenes. The dynamic between them works well with the pacing of the story, and I felt like they carried the narrative well. Their personalities are on opposite spectrums so it makes for some great moments when they disagree on something.

Being that these characters are well written, I do wish that options for English voice over was available for this entry of the series, as it was with its predecessors. There are some humorous and dramatic situations that I would have enjoyed more had I not been forced to read subtitles. The dialog between NPCs is also kept at a minimum in this entry, and the town is unlocked for fast travel from the very beginning instead of naturally allowing the player to explore the areas and find their way around.

World building decisions were made in Atelier Lydie & Suelle that made it feel like it was going for a more classic Atelier design instead of improving on the systems introduced in Atelier Firis. This was a massive miss for the game because the supporting cast is so good. I would have liked to see them explore and interact with a more exciting world. Instead, we don’t even see travel animations or a proper world map found in Atelier Sophie or even an open world found in Atelier Firis. Traveling is now chosen from a list of locations and without a clue of how they fit into this world.

Additionally, the world feels smaller when compared to other entries in the series. However, the explorable areas are packed with materials to collect and monsters to fight. There’s also plenty of variation between the themes of the areas, which was a nice touch. With the said, I would have still liked to see the team tackle an open world again.

World building aside, the battle system in Atelier Lydie & Suelle might be my favorite feature of the game. Each character can be paired with another character allowing a total of six characters to participate in battles. The turn-based system is well balanced and I never grew tired of level grinding or fighting any particular enemy for materials. Furthermore, the special skills in this entry have some of the coolest animations that I’ve seen in the series. There’s also an option to synthesis in battles which is new to the series and one of the most significant innovations to the franchise.

Throughout a few twists in the story, I enjoyed the final boss fight and appreciated the conclusion. However, I wish there was more end game content to dive into. Still, there’s enough to keep players busy for a few hours. Each party member has strengths that make battles fun and I didn’t mind changing up my party to include different characters when in the past I would stick with the same party that I felt was the strongest.

Synthesis is everything in Atelier Lydie & Suelle. The game revolves around synthesis more than any of the previous titles, but if you enjoy this feature than it works quite well. As for me, synthesizing in Atelier Lydie & Suelle was quick and fun. I didn’t run into too many issues when trying to create a particular kind of item and I was never held back from progressing the story because I lacked a specific item trait. It’s also possible to go down the rabbit hole of the synthesis system in Atelier Lydie & Suelle and produce incredibly strong items, some of which require major material farming to unlock. Thankfully, material menus in the game point you in the right direction and I never found myself clueless about where to go next.

It’s no surprise that the music in Atelier Lydie & Suelle is excellent. Gust truly puts a ton of time into giving their titles a soundtrack that goes well with any situation that the characters find themselves in. Also, I felt that the music added a layer of emotion during some of the more dramatic scenes in the story. Sadly, the music doesn’t help Atelier Lydie & Suelle‘s framerate which was way better in Atelier Firis. The performance of the game left me feeling like it was rushed during development. A quick note that I reviewed this game on Nintendo Switch, but encountered similar issues in the PlayStation 4 version.

In the end, Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings brings very little innovations to the Atelier series and plays it way too safe. However, at the same time, the cast of characters are great and make the story a joy to play through, but the lack of voice acting and world building bring disappointment. If you do manage to get to the end, the conclusion of the Mysterious trilogy is rather good and will make it worth it to those who have played through the previous entries. I’d also like to add that Sophie and Firis’ stories also have their own conclusions, which made me kind of sad to know that this is the end of their respective adventure.

Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings has a good battle system and premise, but overall I wanted more from the final entry in the Mysterious trilogy. It seems like a missed opportunity to not include an open world and instead opt for a streamlined adventure with quick travel being the only option for exploration. As main protagonists, Lydie and Suelle are fantastic, but I felt like they deserved better. If you’re looking for a solid story and a decent battle system or if you’re a long time Atelier fan then Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings might work for you, but I was left unimpressed.

Atelier Lydie & Suelle Will Have Only Japanese Voice Overs with Subtitles

Koei Tecmo is doing something quite different from the usual fare with Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings.

During a recent press event hosted by Koei Tecmo America, representatives of the publisher confirmed to DualShockers that the western release of the game will not include English voice-overs. This was also confirmed afterward by a representative of Koei Tecmo Europe.

The audio will be exclusively in Japanese paired with subtitles. This is a relevant change from previous Atelier games that were dubbed in English.

That being said, Koei Tecmo certainly isn’t the first publisher going this route. Series like Atelier have a niche following among JRPG fans, and most of them likely don’t mind or even prefer the original voice-overs.

Atelier Lydie & Suelle Gets Details on Enhanced Battle System; New Character Trailer

Gust and Koei Tecmo launched a new gameplay trailer for Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings, coming to PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC on March 27 in North America and March 30 in Europe.

The publisher has provided further details on the game’s battle system, which receives an adjustment with every release in the Atelier series. During gameplay, the main characters, Lydie and Suelle Marlen, will run into their fair share of enemies out in the field. However, they are not without a new batch of battle options to make these fights easier. For the first time in the series, players are able to synthesize items in the battle through using “Battle Mix” and “Extra Mix”.

Battle Mix focuses on creating Battle Recipes that will buff the party’s weaponry as well as chance the battlefield conditions, such as use magical elements against enemies weak against a particular element. Furthermore, Extra Mix utilizes pre-synthesized items and adds new characteristics to the items, such as changing a regular bomb into an Enormous Bomb.

Players will be joined by an additional six party members who will travel with Lydie and Suelle into battle. This will allow for players to utilize the Combination Battle mechanics. In battle, each of the four characters can partner up with another to form a strong unit to gain added support when engaging with enemies. This means that the four characters in front can focus on attacks and the for in the back can jump in to defend. Players will be able to match the characters they think will be the best pair for their style of play.

Additionally, the publisher launched an English subbed trailer focusing on all the new characters:

  • Adalett – The mischievous young prince of Mathias
  • Mireille – The bright and energetic princess
  • Alt – The mysterious child
  • Grace – The town’s caring nun
  • Fuoko – A girl who lives among the lava falls of “The Great Cascades of Anfel”
  • Neige – The first alchemist to create a ‘Mysterious Painting’

Atelier Lydie & Suelle Gets New Gameplay Trailer Showing Synthesis

Gust and Koei Tecmo launched a new gameplay trailer for Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings, coming to PlayStation 4, Switch, and PlayStation Vita on December 21 in Japan, and PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC on March 27, 2018 in North America and March 30, 2018 in Europe.

The trailer gives players a preview of the new synthesis system from the game, which seems to be a combination of features from Atelier Sophie and Atelier Firis. Players will need to pick materials and combine them together to create new items. However, in Atelier Lydie & Suelle players will be able to paint the synthesis grid in order to create items with different effects.

Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings introduces Lydie and Suelle Marlen to the Atelier series, who will serve as this game’s protagonists. Both have different personalities that set them apart, but share a similar dream of moving away from their hometown to become Atelier Masters.

Recently, the developer showed gameplay from the game running on three platforms: PS4, PS Vita, and Switch. The trailers showed the difference between each of the versions and what fans could expect from which ever version they pick up.

Atelier Lydie & Suelle for PS4, Switch and PC Gets tons of Screenshots Showing Returning Characters

Today is Sunday, and as usual and at the turn of the Midnight in Japan we get new goodies from Koei Tecmo and its Gust subsidiary in the form of new screenshots of the upcoming JRPG Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings.

We get to see a bunch of characters.

Corneria from Atelier Sophie: Alchemist of the Mysterious Book returns, and is now 23. She still runs her shop in Kirchen Bell, and she has come to Merville to purchase merchandise and check the marketplace. The Atelier ranking system is also a good business opportunity for her. She still provides the same services that she did in previous games.

Pamela Ibis is also back, and she is now working at the local church as a sister. She intended to return to Kirchen Bell, but she got on a carriage to Merville instead. She is currently working to save enough money for a passage back home. Being quite peculiar, she has become popular among church goers.

Interestingly, we also get a blacksmith from Mervile named Hagel, who looks exactly like the Hagel from the Arland series. That being said, it’s probably not exactly the same character, as he is kind of a recurring character from previous games as well, without specific continuity. He is cheerful and pleasant to be around, and his family has run the smithy for generations.

On top of the characters, we get to see the exam of the Atelier ranking system, more exploration of the paintings, some frontline abilities and combination arts, and more.

The game will launch in Japan on December 21st, 2017, for PS4, Switch, and PS Vita. Unfortunately, the PS Vita version will come only for Japan. The western version, which will release in March 30th in Europe and March 27th in North Amrica, will skip the Vita in favor of PC.

Atelier Lydie & Suelle Gets Opening Movie Showing Beautifully Animated Characters

Gust and Koei Tecmo launched the opening movie of Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings, coming to PlayStation 4, Switch, and PlayStation Vita on December 21 in Japan, and PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC in North America and Europe in early 2018.

The opening movie shows plenty of the game’s animated cutscenes, but it also sets a light hearted mood of the game’s overall story premise. Additionally, players can get a preview of some of the returning characters from the first two entries of the “Mysterious” trilogy. Lastly, there are a few action scenes that give the impression that Lydie and Suelle know how to handle themselves in battle.

Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings introduces Lydie and Suelle Marlen to the Atelier series, who will serve as this game’s protagonists. Both have different personalities that set them apart, but share a similar dream of moving away from their hometown to become Atelier Masters.

One day the pair come across a mysterious painting, as the title would suggest, and find themselves transported to its world. They discover a world where they can find hidden ingredients and new environments to better themselves at atelier magic and make themselves the best in the country.

Atelier Lydie & Suelle Gets New 1080p Screenshots Showing Firis, Combat and More

Today Koei Tecmo and Gust released a sizable batch of screenshots of the upcoming JRPG Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings.

Firs of all, we get to see the costumes that will be distributed as early purchase bonuseses. The first is Marie’s from Atelier Marie: The Alchemist of Salburg (the first Atelier game released in 1997 for the original PlayStation and Sega Saturn), and the second will be Elie’s from the sequel Atelier Elie: The Alchemist of Salburg 2.

We also see mockups for the contents of the Japanese Premium Box and Atelier 20th Anniversary Box editions.

Since this is the third and last game of the Mysterious series, Firis Mistlud from Atelier Firis: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Journey is back. She is now nineteen years old, and she grew taller, while her appearance also changed considerably. However her lively personality is unchanged.

Thanks to her unparalleled ability as an alchemist, she opened her own atelier in the city of  Melveille, and it immediately became popular. Yet, she is also good with a bow, and learning the art of the hunter from her sister Liane (who also returns in this new game).

Ilmeria Von Leinweber is also back, and she’s also nineteen years old. She was invited directly by the government to open an atelier in Melveille, and she somhow ended up mentoring Lydie and Suelle. Her ability is comparable to Firis’.

The third character we meet is Roger Maaren, 35 years old. He is Lydie and Suelle’s clumsy dad. He’s basically a failure as an alchemist, but  makes it up by being a painter of great talent. Lydie and Suelle often call him a bad father because he’s basically a klutz, and quite wasteful. He is also a bit of a mad scientist, and his failed formulas tend to explode.

We also get to see two words within the paintings, a forest and a fire-based lava environment.

Last, but not least, some screenshots showcase the battle system, in which characters fight in three groups of two, split between the front line and the rear guard. While it’s a command-based turn system, the time before the following action depends on what was selected first. The order of battle will change every time a character acts.

Characters besides  Lydie and Suelle can act as the “support guard,” absorbing damage in their stead. On top of that, characters from the rear guard can execute follow-up skills when certain conditions are satisfied.

When Lydie and Suelle are in the rear guard they can use “Battle Mix,” that allows them to create items that can be concocted with alchemy only during battle following specific battle recipes.

On top of that, if the rear-guard and the front line are set in specific combinations, thy can execute the powerful “Combination Arts,” but details about them have not been revealed.

The game will launch in Japan on December 21st, 2017, for PS4, Switch and PS Vita. The Japanese Vita release will unfortunately be the only one playable on Sony’s portable, as the western release, which will come in early 2018, will skip it in favor of PC.
