Jools Watsham Sheds Light on Upcoming Projects; Soccer Slam, Treasurenauts, and More

Alongside an exposé into the inner machinations of indie sales, marketing, and success on Nintendo Switch, developer Atooi’s founder Jools Watsham has a lot to say about his upcoming projects. Aside from the known commodities — Xeodrifter and Totes the Goat on the horizon — Watsham has revealed two new projects for Nintendo Switch and fleshed out what we can expect from his next, most ambitious title yet.

The first revealed project is a Nintendo Switch arcade soccer title, Soccer Slammers. Drawing inspiration from the NBA Jam series, the game will feature 2-on-2 gameplay in a block-heavy stylized world. In the screenshot (seen in the feature imagine), you can see real team nationalities play which is a nice inclusion. Even better, gamers should be able to get their hands on the game by either June 14, 2018 or July 15, 2018 as Watsham mentions the game will be available “before the World Cup.” It isn’t clear immediately if he is referring to the beginning or the end, but the date is quickly approaching.

Next on Atooi’s list is a Nintendo Switch port of Chicken Wiggle — possibly. Instead of announcing an official release, Watsham instead nudges that the game will be getting an upcoming Kickstarter campaign as Chicken Wiggle: Re-hatched. Of course, Chicken Wiggle is a Nintendo 3DS exclusive 2D platformer that came out only earlier last year.

Last but not least was a general update on Treasurenauts — Watsham’s key upcoming project inherited from the Renegade Kid split, which he claims “is the amalgamation of everything that [he has] learned about platformers.” Not much is actually known about the project itself, however the vast work of gameplay design is complete. At this point, Treasurenauts is just fine tweaking and polishing gameplay and will be playable for E3 2018. However, due to financial restrictions, Watsham still needs to put a significant amount of weight behind the smaller projects and ports to keep Atooi comfortably afloat.

Here is the chart related to hardware.

  1. PS4 – 110,023

  6. New 3DS XL – 3,377
  7. Xbox One X – 1,618
  8. 2DS – 1,094
  9. Xbox One – 68

The result of Monster Hunter World is definitely interesting, as (at least for now) it proves that the Monster Hunter franchise will sell like hot ramen bowls in the winter in Japan regardless of whether it’s on portable or home consoles. Its debut numbers are in the same order of magnitude as the latest releases on 3DS, despite the much smaller comparative installed base of the PS4.

For the sake of comparison, Monster Hunter 4 debuted on 3DS with 1,715,060 units sold in its first week, but the 3DS had over twelve million consoles sold by then.

Of course, the game boosted PS4 unit sales as well, with Sony’s console placing firmly at the top of the pack for the third week in a row. Considering the 140,145 sold last week, the PS4 family of consoles is now sitting at  6,220,546 units sold as of January 28th.

Incidentally, Monster Hunter World is now the best-selling PS4 game in Japan at debut. The game is a PS4 exclusive in the country, while it released for Xbox One as well in the rest of the world (where it sold five million copies in its first three days on the shelves).

It’ll now have to stand the test of longevity, as Monster Hunter games tend to have a long tail. Ironically, Switch users found some comfort in Monster Hunter XX, that resurfaced at the bottom of the chart after a long absence.

There wasn’t much else new released this week in Japan, as basically every publisher stepped aside to make room for the hundred-ton Nergigante. The only game which was left on the field was Bandai Namco’s The Seven Deadly Sins: Knights of Britannia. It definitely paid the price for the affront with an abysmal debut under 7,000 copies sold, which is really poor for a game derived from a popular anime and manga.

For the sake of comparison, you can check out the charts related to the week before.

DOOM VFR’s Latest Update Adds Smooth Locomotion and Windows Mixed Reality Support

Last year, Bethesda spoiled the virtual reality gaming community by bringing three of its most popular games into VR, with DOOM VFR being one of them. That being said, this week, the Maryland-based publisher has added a new update to the PC version of the title, which addresses several issues and introduces a few new features.

According to the publisher, one of the most significant gameplay changes introduces into the game is the ability to play the game with Smooth Locomotion. Aside from adding a new control option in the game, several additional details for Smooth Locomotion have also been added, including speed options for the Smooth Locomotion movement, as well as an option to jump and dash while playing with Smooth locomotion.

The new update also introduces a Weapon Pitch option to adjust the angle of your weapon, the Jump action being added to the control scheme, and addresses an issue with discoloring seen on some HMDs. Lastly, the new patch also allows users who own a Windows Mixed Reality VR headset to play the game (sorry, Oculus Rift owners).

For more information on the title, check out the demanding PC configuration requirements needed to run the game, along with its official launch trailer, which features various snippets of gameplay, and in case you missed it, check out my editorial on DOOM VFR I did early last month.

DOOM VFR is available now on HTC Vive, PlayStation VR, and Windows Mixed Reality.

Hearthstone Getting Balance Changes In Upcoming Update

Blizzard announced in a blog post that balance changes will occur to a number of cards when Hearthstone‘s 10.2 update is live; all of which will be nerfed.

Firstly, Corridor Creeper’s attack will be reduced from 5 to 2. At this moment, this neutral card is a very strong, especially if it is in-hand at the beginning of the game. Due to its mana reduction ability, you can get some big hits shortly after the game begins.

Bonemare’s mana cost will be increased from 7 to 8. Another strong neutral card that has found its way to a variety of decks, the change will allow opponents more time to prepare to counter its ability.

Although it is on its way out of Standard, Patches the Pirate will no longer have the Charge ability. At its current state, Patches is a great card to pull in the early game alongside another Pirate. Due to how effective it is, almost every class has a few Pirates in their deck. The lack of Charge will make him less prevalent in-game and in player’s decks.

Lastly, Raza the Chained’s Battlecry ability will be altered. It will read “Battlecry: If your deck has no duplicates, your Hero Power costs (1) this game.” As commonly combined with Shadowreaper Anduin, the change will negatively impact its power level in both Standard and Wild play.

When the update goes live next month, players will have two weeks to disenchant the altered cards for their full Arcane Dust value.

Hearthstone originally released back in March 2014, and is available on PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices. The latest expansion Kobolds & Catacombs released last month adding 135 new cards.

New England Patriots Win EA’s Annual Super Bowl Prediction in Madden NFL 18

Each year, EA will predict the outcome of each Super Bowl via a simulation in its newest Madden NFL title from EA Tiburon. This year for Super Bowl LII, Madden NFL 18 was used to determine the outcome of the big game, with the teams in question being the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles.

As the title of this article suggests, the New England Patriots came out on top this year. The final score for EA was 24-20, with Tom Brady, the cover athlete of Madden NFL 18, taking home the MVP Honors. While the Eagles did score first in the simulation and fought hard throughout the whole game, the New England Patriots took the lead and kept in the fourth quarter after Tom Brady threw a touchdown pass to Danny Amendola.

EA’s Madden NFL predictions have actually had a decent track record of being correct in the past, especially when it comes to the Patriots. In 2015, they corrected predicted the Patriots’ late-game comeback against the Seattle Seahawks and final score in Super Bowl XLIX. Last year, they also correctly predicted that the New England Patriots would win yet again, this time against the Atlanta Falcons.

You can check out a video showcasing highlights from the simulated game below. Madden NFL 18 is currently available on PS4 and Xbox One.
